What
could be better than casting off and making way on the trip
of a lifetime, visiting far away destinations in company
with family and friends?
Perfect! But did you know
that most pleasure craft insurance policies limit their
coverage to voyages no further than 250 nautical miles
from the mainland of Australia and extensions are not
possible?
For this reason, you'll
need specialised Blue Water Cruising insurance from professional
insurers and you'll need to start the process as early
as possible as, unfortunately, not every proposal meets
the strict criteria imposed by insurers and insurance
may not be available. Insurers will base their decision
on the answers you provide to their Blue Water Questionnaire.
For example,
insurers tend to decline to offer insurance for boats
cruising offshore if they are under 35' in length.
You're also unlikely to meet the criteria if you plan
to sail single handed as it's generally a requirement
that you cruise with a minimum of 2 experienced crew.
Your boat must also meet offshore safety requirements.
In terms of cruising grounds, you may have to plan to be west
of 160 degrees East between the dates the 15th November
and the 30th April.
On most occasions, you will be asked
to provide a survey and valuation report of the hull
and in addition, you may need to engage a qualified
rigger to conduct a rigging survey. So if your trip falls
within these parameters and you're keen to get going,
we're here to make everything plain sailing. To start
the ball rolling, contact one of our brokers and ask for the Blue Water Questionnaire.
Bon Voyage!
